Capital High School
On Friday, April 8th:
• All Band members will report to the band room immediately following their lunch period.
• We will load the trailer, get organized, and be ready to leave RHS at 12:45pm.
• We will arrive at Capital High School around 1:15 to unload the trailer and move our equipment into the building.
• At approximately 1:40-1:50 we’ll be able to move to the warm-up room (Capital’s Band Room), and from there we go to the stage for our Ratings Performance at 2:20pm.
• We will gather our equipment, load the trailer, and depart Capital High School as quickly as possible after we perform and shouldn’t have any problem getting back to Riverside by 3:45 so that everyone can catch their bus home.
For the performance, All Band Members MUST wear Concert Black!
What Is Ratings?
All school bands are required to attend a WVSSAC sanctioned
“Regional Band Ratings Festival” each year. Ratings, as we call it, was cancelled for the past two years due to Covid-19, but they will be held this year!
The Region 4 Festival (our region) is held at Capital High School and includes all of the school bands in Kanawha County over two days. Nine of the 12 middle school bands will play on (East Bank plays at 10:40am). The remaining 3 middle schools will play on Friday morning (Dupont plays at 10:15am), followed by the 8 high school bands (we play at 2:20pm).
The Auditorium at Capital will be open for spectators to watch the performances. Please do not enter or exit while a band is performing!
Each band that performs will be rated (graded) by a panel of 3 judges. Each judge will evaluate each of our two pieces in the areas of: Tone, Intonation, Ensemble Effect, Interpretation, and Technique. All scores will be averaged together to arrive at our overall rating.
The possibilities are:
• Rating I (A) This division represents the finest conceivable performance for the event and the class of participants being judged: worthy of the distinction of being recognized as among the very best.
• Rating II (B) This rating reflects an unusual performance in many respects but not one worthy of the highest rating due to minor defects. However, it is a performance of distinctive quality.
• Rating III (C) This rating is awarded for a good performance, but one that is not outstanding. The performance shows accomplishment, and marked promise, but is lacking in one or more essential qualities.
• Rating IV (D) This rating describes a performance that shows some obvious weaknesses. These may reflect handicaps in the way of instrumentation or lack of rehearsal time.
• Rating V (F) This rating indicates a performance which reveals much room for improvement. The director should check his methods, instrumentation, etc., with those of more mature organizations.
Friday, January 14th - 2:10pm
There will be a meeting of the Band Boosters on Monday, January 24th beginning at 6:00pm in the Band Room.
Everyone is welcome to attend!
